USA JUDO Coach Certification and Education Announcement from Director Pat Burris

Earning the designation of Professional Judo Coach is a rewarding experience.  During the process of becoming certified, you will gain knowledge and experience which will be valuable to you and to your athletes.  USA Judo Coach Certifications signify exceptional competence and credibility and identify you as a professional instructor.  You are a part of a distinguished group of coaches certified by the United States Olympic Committees NGB, USA Judo.

We have taken steps to make maintaining your certification easier; you are no longer required to attend a clinic each year to keep your certification active.  As a Professional Coach, you have a responsibility to continuously improve your knowledge and experience through annual continuing education as is the standard in other professions. We encourage you to challenge yourself to excel to higher levels of certification.

The leadership of USA Judo has taken steps to move this organization into a more professional mode in line with the directive of the United States Olympic Committee.  While change is often difficult, the Coaches Certification and Education Program has accepted the challenge given to us by our leaders and by the USOC and we will move this program forward into a more professional position.

With this in mind, the following changes have been made to the USA Judo Coach Certification Program:

1)      All Coach Certifications are renewable on an annual basis.  The 2007 membership period is January 1, 2007 – December 31, 2007.  After January 1, there is a 90-day grace period for coaches to renew for insurance purposes.  All coaches certified in 2006 or before need to renew by March 31, 2007.  Renewals will be accepted after that time, but coaches carrying insurance policies will want to renew before the grace period expires.

2)  There are 6 Levels of Coach Certifications;

  • Club Coach (Club Coaches will receive a State Level Certificate)
  • State Level (formerly E Level)
  • Regional Level (formerly D Level)
  • National Level (formerly C Level)
  • Continental Level (formerly B Level)
  • International Level (formerly A Level)

The Club Coach Level is for head instructors who conduct classes in their respective dojos and wish to obtain a USA Judo Club Certificate.  ONLY Club Coaches are required to have CPR and First Aid Training.  Obviously, it is recommended for all coaches, but because competition rules mandate that medical staff be on hand at events, tournament coaches are not required to be trained in First Aid/CPR.

We are now allowing Senior Brown Belts to apply for State Level Coaching Certification.  As for all Coach Certifications, the rank must be certified thru USA Judo, the individual must be at least 18 years of age and pass the required background screen.

Effective January 2008, all Coaches coaching at the National Level must have a minimum of National Level Certification.

Effective January 2009, all Coaches coaching at the International Level must have a minimum of Continental Level Certification.

3)  Fees:

  • Renewal fees $50.00 per year, plus $20.00 for ID Card
  • New Certification Fees; $70.00 (includes ID), plus $16.00 fee to SCCI for background screen
  • Club Registration Fee; $25.00

Renewals:  We are allowing coaches who were previously certified to renew their certifications, at the same level, without retaking the certification course.  In order to progress up the coaching levels, coaches are required to take the appropriate course.

ID Cards: Your ID Card is your credential to get onto the floor at USA Judo competitions.  Additionally, many local tournament directors are allowing USA Judo Coaches with an ID Card free access to their venues.  We have also implemented a change in coach registration for events.  If you have a USA Judo ID Card, you will not need to pre-register for coaching at USA Judo events.

Certification Clinics:  Only USA Judo Certified Course Instructors are eligible to serve as certification clinicians.  For information on clinics, contact Patrick Burris, Director, USA Judo Coach Certification and Education.

As of March 5, 2007, approximately 200 coaches have renewed their 2007 Coach Certification.  Thank you Coaches for making this program better.

Coaches with questions regarding the new policy can contact Patrick Burris, Director of Coach Education and Certification at burris7276@sbcglobal.net

IMPORTANT NOTICE:

Effective December 31, 2006, all USA Judo Coaches Certifications must be renewed on an annual basis.  Certifications are valid from the time of completion through December 31.  After December 31, Coaches will have a 90-day grace period in which to renew.

USA Judo Coaches Certification policy allows for a 90-day grace period beyond the expiration date before the Coach Certification is officially marked as lapsed.  This is to avoid penalizing the Coach with loss of certification.

Coaches with questions regarding the new policy can contact Patrick Burris, Director of Coach Education and Certification at burris7276@sbcglobal.net

Renewal forms can be found at http://www.usjudo.org/documents/CoachesRenewalForm.pdf

USA Judo Coaches Notes, August Edition: A New Paradigm for the Modern Judoka by Rhadi Ferguson and Juan Carlos Santana

I remember when I was growing up people used to call the house and ask my mother for some advice. The funny thing about it was, my mother is a lawyer.  I used to see the frustration on her face sometimes when she would get off of the phone and she would say, “I’m an attorney, all I have to give is advice.” And I understand her frustration now. As a strength and conditioning professional... more>
