Team USA Qualifies 10 Divisions for the 2008 Olympic Games on Sunday

 

(Miami, Fla.) – At least 10 U.S. athletes will be competing in the Olympic Games in Beijing following the completion of a two-year qualifying process that concluded on Sunday in Miami at the Olympic Zone 1 Cup.

USA Wins Women’s Silver, Men’s Bronze in Pan Am Team Competition

 

Team USA ended the team competition at the Pan American Championships on Saturday with two more medals – silver in the women’s division and bronze in the men’s. 

Ronda Rousey (Wakefield, Mass. / NYAC / USA Judo National Team FORCE / 70kg) and Travis Stevens (Glenville, N.Y. / USA Judo National Training Site at the Jason Morris Judo Center / 81kg) led their teams by going undefeated in each of their three matches.

A 2007 World silver medalist, Rousey’s first match was against Mayra Aguiar (BRA), the teenager who she beat in the final seconds of the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro... more>

Gotay Wins Gold at Pan Am Championships in Miami, Qualifies United States for Beijing at 57kg

 

(Miami, Fla.) – Always a perfectionist, even after a gold medal win, it’s a rarity to hear Valerie Gotay (Harlingen, Texas / USA Judo National Training Site at Harlingen) say she’s happy with how she fought at a tournament.

Team USA Wins Three Medals, Gotay to Fight for Gold at Pan Am Championships Tonight in Miami

 

(Miami, Fla.) – Valerie Gotay (Harlingen, Texas / USA Judo National Training Site at Harlingen) will fight for gold tonight in the 57kg division at the Pan American Championships.

Competition begins at 6 p.m. at the James L. Knight Center and will include only gold medal matches as bronze medals were awarded in the afternoon.

Schedule Change for Day 2 of the Pan Ams in Miami

 

(Miami, Fla.) – Please be advised that the schedule has changed for the second day of competition at the 2008 Pan Am Championships at the James L. Knight Center.

Finals will begin at 6 p.m. instead of 5 p.m. and will include ONLY gold medal matches.

Team USA Continues Quest for Beijing Qualification on Day 2 of Pan Ams in Miami

 

(Miami, Fla.) – After a day in which Team USA found that the women’s 78kg and 63kg divisions may fall short of qualifying for the Olympic Games in Beijing, the Team hopes to get back on track on Friday with the qualification of the lightweight divisions. 

Competition begins at 10 a.m. at the James L. Knight Center with preliminary competition and concludes with finals at 5 p.m.

As one of the final opportunities for countries to qualify in each weight division for Beijing, athletes from each country will hope to bring their “A Games” to the table.

A preview of the Olympic weight divisions is as follows.  The non-Olympic light and Open weight divisions also will be held on Friday.

Stevens Wins Silver Medal

Travis Stevens (Glenville, N.Y. / USA Judo National Training Site at the Jason Morris Judo Center) advanced to his second Pan Am final in as many tries on Thursday, winning a silver medal and solidifying an 81kg division slot for the United States in the 2008 Olympic Games. 

Stevens fought Guilherme Luna (BRA) in the Pan Am Championships final at the James L. Knight Center, but neither player scored during the five-minute regulation period and the match went into overtime where Luna threw Stevens to win the match... more>

(Miami, Fla.) – The question heard most often this week at the James L. Knight Center continues to be “How’s your division?  Have you qualified yet?”

With the Pan American Championships beginning on Thursday, so too begins the final opportunity for athletes from more than 20 nations to qualify for Beijing. 

The Pan Am Championships will begin on Thursday with the men’s and women’s lightweight divisions.  Friday will include the men’s and women’s heavyweight divisions… more>

Twenty-Two Nations Scheduled to Compete at Pan Ams, Final Olympic Qualifier in Miami This Week

(Miami, Fla.) – As delegations began arriving at the 2008 Pan American Championships on Tuesday, anticipation was in the air as at least 22 countries have registered to compete in the final qualifying tournament for the 2008 Olympic Games.

The Pan Am Championships and Olympic Zone Cup will be held May 8-11 at the James L. Knight Center, 400 SE Second Ave., Miami, FL 33131. 

Among the more than 200 athletes expected to compete are the following past Pan American Champions:

Pan American Judo Championships to be Webcast LIVE from Miami

For the first time ever, the Pan American Championships will be Webcast LIVE on www.usjudo.org free of charge to judo fans around the world May 8-11.  The Webcast will be shown as a service to USA Judo members and fans around the world with the authority granted to the PJU by USA Judo. 

The tournament begins LIVE at 10 a.m. (EDT) on Thursday.  Competition will begin at 10 a.m. Thursday with one tatami being streamed live onto your computer throughout the preliminary competition.  Finals will begin at 6 p.m. on Thursday and will be commentated by Olympians Leo White and Rhadi Ferguson... more>

Cuban Delegation Arrives in Miami on Monday for 2008 Pan American Championships

Twenty-two members of the Cuban delegation will be arriving at the Miami International Airport at 2:30 p.m. via Panama on Monday May 5 to participate in the Pan American Championships and Olympic Zone Cup, May 8-11.The team includes four current or former World Champions, will be competing in the event which is the final qualifier for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

“These Pan American Judo Championships will be one of the most important international events ever held in our country due to the presence of world powers Cuba and Brazil plus great judokas from Venezuela, Ecuador, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Canada, Mexico and, of course, our own USA athletes,” said USA Judo CEO Jose H.
