Day 1 Complete Results

–Match highlights from the final rounds of the first day of competition
include:
- Three-time
World Champion Kosei Inoue (JPN) throws former Pan Am Champion Oscar
Braison (CUB) in the +100kg repechage final with a gorgeous uchimata
(inner thigh throw) a little over a minute into the match.
- Inoue
would later get thrown by Joao
Schlittler (BRA) in the bronze medal match. An ecstatic Schlittler cried and was
greeted by an adoring home crowd.
- Schlittler
lost in the semifinal to Tamerlan Tmenov
(RUS) off a footsweep.
- Eighteen-year-old Teddy Riner (FRA) advanced to the
+100kg final by the skin of his teeth, throwing Xiangiun Wei (CHN) for a yuko at the buzzer in the semifinals.
- Riner then threw four-time World medalist Tmenov for a waza-ari in with a minute left to win gold.
- Yurisel Laborde (CUB) earned her second
World Title in the 78kg division while Edinanci Da Silva (BRA), one of the favorites in the division,
failed to win her third World medal and placed seventh.
- Down
by a penalty, Laborde threw Sae
Nakazawa (JPN) for ippon with four seconds left.
- Nakazawa
earned her finals slot by throwing Lucia
Morico (ITA) for a yuko halfway through Golden Score
- Luciano Correa (BRA / 100kg) became
only the second Brazilian ever to win Worlds, countering Peter Cousins (GBR) for ippon in
the last 30 seconds of the final when the score was tied with a shido
each.
- Correa
advanced to the final after throwing 2007 European Champion Daniel Hadfi (HUN) for ippon in
the first minute of Golden Score in the semifinal with an o uchi gari
(major inner reaping.
- Cousins
has had great success since moving up to 100kg from 90kg, wining his first
World medal.
