Rousey Wins Silver Medal!

Ronda Rousey ( Wakefield , Mass. / NYAC / USA Judo National Team FORCE) lived up to everyone’s expectations on Friday when she won the silver medal at the World Championships in the 70kg division and became the first American woman to medal at a Worlds since 1995.

Team USA begins competition in four heavyweight divisions on Thursday at the World Championships in Rio de Janeiro , Brazil .

Competition begins with early rounds at 11 a.m. local time (10 a.m. EDT).  Medal rounds begin at 8:45 p.m. local time (7:45 p.m. EDT).

Reser Named OTC Athlete of the Month for August

In the Colorado Springs Olympic Training Center Athlete Newsletter, released last week, Ryan Reser (73kg) was named the OTC August Athlete of the Month along with gymnast David Durante, the 2007 Visa Championships All-Around gold medalist, who received July Athlete of the Month honors. 

Reser was recognized for his outstanding performance at the Pan American Games where he won the 73kg title and earned both the Ippon Trophy and the Male Outstanding Competitor Award.

Team USA Departs for World Championships on Sunday  

(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – Sixteen athletes will leave on Sunday to compete at the World Judo Championships in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Competition at the World Championships will run from Sept. 13-16 with four divisions being contested on each day and the top six countries in each weight qualifying their slot for the 2008 Olympic Games.  

Competition schedule is as follows:  

September 13

Men’s 100kg and +100kg

Women’s 78kg and +78kg  

September 14

Men’s 81kg and 90kg

Women’s 63kg and 70kg  

September 15

Men’s 66kg and 73kg

Women’s 52kg and 57kg  

September 16

Men’s 60kg and Open

Women’s 48kg and Open  

Team USA is returning to Rio less than two months after a successful Pan American Games in which U.S. players won six medals, including two gold.  

With nine members of the squad returning to their second World Team, this year’s crew looks to have the depth and experience needed to reach the podium for the first time since Jimmy Pedro (Methuen, Mass.) won the 73kg division in 1999... more>

 

 

World Championships to Include 776 Players from 129 Nations

(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – The organizers of the 2007 World Championships recently announced that the event, being held Sept. 13-16 in Rio de Janeiro , Brazil , will be one of the largest Worlds in recent history with 776 judo players scheduled to participate from 129 countries.  

European countries represent the largest contingent of players with 45 delegations expected to attend, followed by Asia with 31 delegations.  

A total of 467 men and 307 women’s will compete in 16 weight divisions, including the non-Olympic Open weight division.   Men's 81kg is expected to be the largest division with 73 competitors... more>
