More than 700 athletes competed on Sunday at the San Jose Buddhist Sensei Memorial Tournament, a USA Judo Senior E-Level Point Tournament, at the San Jose State University Event Center, including 125 competitors in the senior black belt divisions.

Two-time Pan American Champion Chuck Jefferson (Campbell, Calif. / San Jose State University / 73kg) won each of his first three matches by ippon (instant win) leading into his final match against Michael Eldred (Fruitland, Idaho / Western Idaho Judo Institute) who recently won his first B-Level medal with a silver at the British Open.

Jefferson and Eldred fought a close match with Jefferson taking with gold medal by a waza-ari (half-point).

Former World Team members Sayaka Matsumoto (El Cerrito, Calif. / NYAC / East Bay Judo Institute / 52kg) and Heidi Moore (Englewood, Colo. / Denver Judo / +78kg and Open) each won her respective division.

Matsumoto, fighting up from 48kg, won her first two matches by ippon, advancing to the final against Grace Ohashi (Colorado Springs, Colo. / Olympic Training Center USA Judo National Training Site).  Matsumoto defeated Ohashi, who finished fifth at the British Open in this division, by a yuko score.

Moore, who won a bronze medal at the 2006 Senior Nationals in the 78kg division, won each of the seven matches she fought in the Open and +78kg divisions by ippon.

Natalie Laursen (Livermore, Calif. / Amador Judo) also had a stand-out performance in the Open division, earning a silver medal as the 63kg #1 junior was the only non-heavyweight in the division.

Last year's Senior Nationals silver medalist Nate Torra (El Cerrito, Calif. / NYAC / East Bay Judo Institute / 66kg) won all four of his matches by ippon, including a defeat of the division’s #1 junior Ross Nakamura (Mission Hills, Calif. / Valley Judo).

Tony Sangimino (Burlingame, Calif. / Cahill’s Judo / 100kg), who won a silver medal at last year’s Pan Am Juvenile Championships, was one of the day’s youngest winners.  Among his victories, the 16-year-old beat Zane Malloy (Oak Harbor, Wash. / NAS Whidbey Island Judo) in the semifinals.  Malloy had previously beaten the former #1 junior at last summer’s Junior World Trials.

In the finals, Sangimino defeated visually impaired player Myles Porter (Colorado Springs, Colo. / Olympic Training Center USA Judo National Training Site) by ippon.  Porter, who finished fifth at last year’s World Blind Judo Championships, finished third overall.

The men’s 90kg division also featured some excellent matches as Colin Burns (Colorado Springs, Colo. / Olympic Training Center USA Judo National Training Site) defeated rostered players Jose Bencosme and Atsushi Yoshinaga, both of San Jose State University, to win the division.

Last year’s Collegiate National Champions Tomoyo Yoshinaga (70kg) and Corinne Geier (63kg), both of San Jose State University, also won their divisions here as well.
