Middle and High School Nationals Results

(Tinley Park, Ill.) – Nearly 300 junior athletes competed at the USA Judo Middle and High School National Championships Saturday at the Holiday Inn Select and Convention Center in Tinley Park, Ill. with nearly all of the top-ranked juniors in attendance.

In one of the most anticipated matches of the day, top-ranked Bobby Lee (Lauderhill, Fla./North Miami USA Judo National Training Site/73kg) fought Nick Delpopolo (Glenville, N.Y./Jason Morris Judo Center) in the final.

Lee, who will represent the United States at the Pan American Junior Championships in Colorado Springs, April 13-14, also is the #3-ranked senior in the division.

Delpopolo recently moved up to the #2 junior slot following last week’s bronze medal win at the New York Open, a senior-level elite international tournament and has rapidly become an athlete to watch in the division as Senior Nationals approach in April.

The two athletes were evenly matched for the first four minutes with neither scoring until Delpopolo threw Lee for yuko with less than a minute remaining to guarantee the match.

The 60kg division also included a much anticipated final between Jean Pierre Durand (North Lauderdale, Fla./North Miami USA Judo National Training Site) and Jeremy Liggett (Scotia, N.Y./Jason Morris Judo Center).  Both athletes placed fifth at the New York Open and last met in a final at the 2005 U.S. Junior Open with Liggett prevailing.

This time, Liggett won again, choking Durand for a win by ippon (instant win) in just over a minute.

On the women’s side, Kayla Harrison (Middletown, Ohio/Renshuden) moved up to 70kg from 63kg.  The 15-year-old worked her way through the bracket easily to meet 14-year-old Hayley Shadden (Mineral Wells, Texas/Ruben Martin Judo) in the final.  Harrison, last year’s High School Champion at 57kg, threw Shadden for ippon with an o uchi gari (inner circle leg throw) in 42 seconds.

Harrison also won the Open division, first scoring yuko (quarter-point) and then throwing heavyweight Brittni Bradford (Land O’Lakes, Fla./St. Pete Judo) for ippon.

Also in women’s competition, Franchesca Durand (Coral Springs, Fla./North Miami USA Judo National Training Site/52kg), a two-time Pan American Infantil Champion, defeated Nicki Schultheis (Gurnee, Ill./Gurnee Judo), last year’s National High School Champion with a koka score on a penalty for “excessive defensive posture.”
